yin & yang mashup for summer

from the archives

Hi friends. This is a yin practice from the archives for the summer season. It targets the upper body meridian lines (heart & small intestine) via the shoulders, inner/outer arms and backbends. In TCM, the summer season is associated with the fire element, with growth, passion and abundance. It is also associated with the emotion of joy. Not that you “should” be happy or that you’re “supposed to” feel joy (shoulding ourselves never really works does it?) but as a reminder of your capacity for joy. That joy could be available to you. That you don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect to access joy. Ross Gay talks about “the insistence of joy,” even — especially!— in times of hardship, and about how delight is a practice in and of itself. It’s pretty beautiful. Writing about the joy and fire of summer is also reminding me of the Mary Oliver poem, What I Have Learned So Far, which she ends by saying: be ignited, or be gone.

If you have had reservations in the past about exploring yin yoga because of its long hold times, this might be a good gateway class for you; we incorporate gentle yang flows throughout class to break up the many moments of stillness. Let your movement have a real slow, loving, intentional quality about it <3

You might like to have some pillows or a few blankets/towels nearby for added support. Enjoy!
