“Anatomically, the core is that which lies close to the bone to give you strength and hold you up in life. Our core values are those that lie close to our heart and give us courage and conviction… What are some of your core values in life? What beliefs give you strength? Our core is the essence of our being.”
—Gabrielle Harris, The Language of Yin
Happy Halloween, yogis!
Coming in at 45 min, this abbreviated practice features some funky log rolls, block tossing, halo lunges, side planks and flowing chairs to help you light up your core (and have fun doing it).
Shoutout to Brea Johnson of Heart + Bones Yoga, Lindsay Bomgren of Nourish Move Love, and Gabrielle Harris — they are all wonderful teachers who are keeping me inspired lately, and this practice was heavily influenced by their teachings. Oh, and shoutout to the children’s book “Goodnight Little Fish” by Lucy Cousins, which features a character called “curly-whirly-twisty-twirly fish,” whose name I borrowed for the title of this class.
If you want to turn up the heat, use a dumbbell instead of a block for the halo movement in your lunge, try some 1-legged deadlifts in your Virabhadrasana 3, or weave in a few invigorating rounds of Surya Namaskar A after the tabletop warm-up.
That’s all I got for ya today… have fun!
