Ok listen, I never thought I’d be filming yoga videos. When things shut down in 2020 and I couldn’t teach in person anymore, my initial feeling was: no, not doing that. A lot of us found ourselves doing things we never expected to do during that time, though, and I ended up really enjoying it! I love being able to connect with students who live far away, and editing/rewatching those classes has made me into a better teacher, because I’ve had to confront my habits, quirks and teaching crutches (liiiiike how I often talk with my eyes closed as a way of making myself feel more comfortable)… but I am not a videographer. I’m learning as I go. Joe keeps nudging me to get a little headset mic to improve sound quality— after this one, I think I might.
I went to the park to film this because I was on the hunt for bird sounds and a lush backdrop, which I did find. My plans were foiled, though, by a construction crew who showed up mid-practice to work on museum renovations. C’est la vie. I reduced the background noise down as much as I could but it is still hilariously loud at times. Even so, I put a lot of time and energy into researching, planning, teaching and recording, and I don’t want to just throw this class away— so I’m sending it along as a free offering here, marred though it may be. Maybe you will not be bothered by the construction noise. Maybe you can work with the sound and use it to challenge your meditative focus— wink, wink. Think of it as the day-old cookie bin at your local bakery— like, it’s still good, it’s still a cookie, it’s just not as perfect as something freshly baked.
OKAY, so: electric heart. This class is luscious and slow. Its focus is on our relationship with the physical and energetic heart space, and how embodying the heart and bringing awareness to that space informs our movement. Also lots of opportunities to lay on the ground.
Some videos, teachers and articles that I reference in this class:
Opening Your Heart: Embodying the Front & Back of Your Heart from Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen
Release Stress on Your Heart from Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen
Unwinding the Heart Center from Gil Hedley (this is not for the squeamish!)
The Electric Yogi: Exploring the Body’s Electrical Nature from Bernie Clark
Energetic Communication from The Heart Math Institute
Jewels Dripping From Spider Webs, a yin yoga class with my teacher Kelly Kamm
Paid subscribers: there’s a new playlist in the library for you, and below is the link to a 75 min prenatal yin class for your enjoyment <3 Normally I am not able to share my studio classes1 alongside my personal offerings (their policy), but I got the OK on this one. We hold postures for just 1-3 min, so even if you’re not pregnant, it could be a nice, mellow entryway into yin yoga ↴↴↴
That’s all!
Love you all!
