At this point it feels rather redundant to call a class of mine “slow,” since most of the classes I teach these days are on the slow side, but voila, here is a SLOW practice that feels like your whole body gets taken through one of those rock polisher machines you had when you were a kid — in like a really gentle, juicy way, obviously. We combine functional hip mobility with more traditional “hip-opening” postures (like firelog). There are a lot of delicious moments that feel like you are getting a massage from the inside out — rolling on the floor (essential), incorporating explorative movement into our side bends and twists, etc. As always, I try to make lots of room for you to practice listening from the inside out and emphasize moving intuitively over fitting a form, while still offering the forms themselves. I hope you enjoy.
Readings from class:
This powerful bodhisattva prayer, which the Dalai Lama apparently recites daily —
May I be a guard for those who need protection
A guide for those on the path
A boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood
May I be a lamp in the darkness
A resting place for the weary
A healing medicine for all who are sick
A vase of plenty, a tree of miracles
And for the boundless multitudes of living beings
May I bring sustenance and awakening
Enduring like the earth and sky
Until all beings are freed from sorrow
And all are awakened.
(wow)
I also share an excerpt from “School Prayer,” by Diane Ackerman, in which she remixes that above sentiment so beautifully—
I swear I will not dishonor
my soul with hatred,
but offer myself humbly
as a guardian of nature,
as a healer of misery,
as a messenger of wonder,
as an architect of peace.
(wow) read the whole poem here!
